©1991 AXO SPORT AMERICA is printed in small type on the chest, which puts this design at the exact moment AXO was winning the graphics war. In 1990–91 the company introduced its Gelprint jerseys — all-over printing so saturated that buyers cleared the racks, and so airless that AXO had to answer with the cotton-blend Aquator jersey for riders who wanted to breathe. The look is right here: black ink thrown across royal blue like a dropped can, AXO SPORT on a white chest band, the outline logo under a silver brush-script scrawl, the mark repeated down both sleeves and around the collar. 1991 was also the year AXO signed Damon Bradshaw to a contract large enough to carry a no-injury clause, and Jeremy McGrath had ridden Kawasaki in AXO the season before. A splatter jersey is what it looks like when a company has the fastest riders and the loudest clothes at the same time.
