At 4.0 inches these carry more area and more bite than the 3.6 version — the extra height puts more fin in the water when the board goes on rail, while the foil still feeds a center fin so the board reads as a 2+1 and not a thruster.
These suit a surfer who pushes hard off the tail and wants the board to bite and hold through a carve rather than break loose — the setup for a mid-length surfed aggressively in powerful, walled-up surf. If you mostly trim and want the board to stay playful, or it starts to track, the 3.6" CI side bites free the tail back up.
More About This Fin
The 4.0-inch CI side bites are the larger size in True Ames's Channel Islands side bite range, FCS compatible in solid fiberglass and sold as a pair. They use the same Channel Islands template that anchors the CI Mid 2+1 program built with Devon Howard, and are intended for 2+1 mid-lengths and longboards paired with a 6.5-inch to 7-inch center fin. The same template is also offered in a 3.6-inch size.
