Lovelace designed this pair around the FM model's unusual placement — the fins sit over 2" off the rail on his mid-lengths and run nearly parallel, with or without a leading fin depending on the rider. That placement is why the fin is foiled 50/50 on both sides rather than flat on the inside, and why it carries considerably more area than an average twin: 5.66" deep on a 5.84" base, 22.46 sq in per fin.
A double 50/50 foil works the same either way water meets it, which suits fins set well off the rail and close to parallel. Combined with the area and the near-upright template, it gives speed, positive drive and the ability to lean a board over and hold a heavy rail carve into a long arcing turn. It is not a loose, skatey twin, and it was not meant to be.
Lovelace's own advice: an FM if you have one, otherwise mid-length twins, larger surfers on 6'-range twins, or anyone who likes to weight the rail and load up drive. On a small board under a light rider it is more fin than the shape will use.
