Master craftsman and pioneer of the shaping industry, Renny Yater, designed this fin to accompany his high-performance single fin known as ‘The Pocket Rocket’, a classic pintail of the early ‘70s era . Its upright profile, combined with a full foil and minimal flex, make it a performance-driven and trustworthy fin. This fin has stood the test of time and become quite versatile, performing well both in a wide spectrum of equipment and in all types of waves. This fin's relative stiffness provides power, drive, and stability–making this fin a great option when the surf is bigger.
Form | Optimally balanced length to base to rake, full foil
Function | Well suited for most boards and conditions, predictable performance
Feel | Plenty of drive and hold, ease release, trim and turning ability
Overall | Truly a timeless template that just simply works
Its relative stiffness provides power, drive, and stability, making this fin a great option when the surf is bigger.
Put it on a pulled-in longboard, a retro single, or a mid-length when you want stiff, upright drive that holds through fast sections — the board accelerates off your back foot instead of flexing and releasing. Size larger for a standalone single, smaller for a 2+1 center; if you want a more forgiving, flexier fin that works across more board types, the Greenough 4A is the call instead.
The Yater Classic is a solid fiberglass single fin designed by Renny Yater, made by True Ames, originally drawn to go with his Pocket Rocket pintail. The template is upright with relatively little rake, a full foil, and minimal flex. It comes in sizes of 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 9, 9.5, and 10 inches, covering retro single fins, pulled-in longboards, and mid-lengths, with smaller sizes usable as 2+1 centers.
