A single fin designed by the man, the myth, the legend… That is Dale Velzy, a true pioneer of the surf industry. Velzy’s Classic fin is exactly that... A true classic, exhibiting design characteristics that encourage long, drawn-out lines and smooth turns. Velzy’s legacy dates back to the mid ‘30s when he started surfing and shaping balsa/redwood boards for himself and his friends underneath the Hermosa Beach Pier. Credited as being the first surfer to hang ten as well as the world’s first commercial shaper, Velzy is renowned–among many things–for his contributions to modern longboard design. The Velzy Classic is a minimal area fin with a fair amount of sweep and some trustworthy length in the base. Its small surface area makes it feel fast, while its pronounced rake and low profile enable longer, drawn-out turns. Relatively stiff with a fuller foil, Velzy initially designed this fin to pair with Vee bottom surfboards so that the projection could come from the rails and directional Vee from your board. However, the Velzy Classic has been proven to work quite well in many types of boards as the fin itself provides a lot of spring, forward projection, and a rather lively feeling under your feet that is a bit addicting. Carve deep off the bottom and you will see! Like Velzy, his Classic fin has an avid following. It’s fun to get experimental with this fin since there are so many possibilities of boards and waves that it can work with! This fin draws arcs — speed comes from holding the line through turns and projecting cleanly out. Stiff and planted rather than springy: if you want smooth, drawn-out trim with a longer arc on a Vee bottom or rail-driven shape, this is the call.
More About This Fin
Dale Velzy designed this fin in the 1960s to work with Vee bottom templates: a wide base supplies forward projection while minimal area keeps the fin from over-gripping, with a stiff foil throughout and no progressive flex. It is made by True Ames in four sizes — 8.5", 9.0", 9.5", and 10.0" — with 8.5"–9.0" suiting mid-lengths in the 8'–9' range and 9.5"–10.0" suiting bigger boards, logs, and mini gliders. It pairs with V-bottom boards, speed shapes, and other boards that trim off the rail.
